Bahookie History
Jay Lafferty is a professional stand up comic. Dan Scott is a professional pole dancer, teacher and personal trainer. The entertainment industry is a notorious fickle place and ageing, particular ageing as a female in the industry is packed with pit falls. It was while reflecting on this Jay decided to tackle the problem of getting older head on, enter Dan. The pair were brought together by a goal to create a show which would celebrate ageing, body positivity and promote joy through a fusion of stand up comedy and pole dancing and so Bahookie was born.
Jay a total novice pole dancer in fact, a recluse of any physical activity at all worked at first weekly then several times a week with Dan over the course of eight months to learn the basics of pole dancing. Dan introduced Jay to the wonders of community pole dancing - where people from all walks of life with a variety of different reasons for starting pole come together in a supportive nurturing environment which began to form the basis of the narrative of what would eventually become Bahookie an hour long one women show that debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2023.
Working together through broken ribs, torn intercostal muscles and pulled left boobs Jay and Dan created a comedy pole dancing show which tackled subjects from ageing and internalised misogyny to the power of movement and how to find joy in a society which feels increasingly less and less joyful. The show itself was a tour de force playing for 27 days to sold out rooms and 5 star reviews.
The real achievement has been the feedback from audiences - the purpose of Bahookie was to inspire people to find their joy and since the fringe finished Jay has received many communications online and in person from people inspired to get off their bums and go out and try new creative endeavours. So much so that a project which began life as an idea for a fringe show has now taken flight. The show is currently in development for a UK based tour, a podcast, a radio show, and comedy special and is currently being pitched for a T.V. series.
Bahookie has its roots in the Scottish creative community. An idea conceived and developed by two Edinburgh based creatives with a modest goal of creating a comedy and pole dance fusion show which might tackle some of the stigma around female ageing while promoting the benefits of physical movement. We are so immensely proud of what Bahookie has become and what it will evolve into over the coming year. It just goes to show - Yir Never To Old!
